The dirt track racing community is mourning the passing of Jeff Hinkemeyer, a legendary figure in Midwest motorsports and former NASCAR Winston Racing Series regional champion, who died peacefully on Sunday afternoon at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Hinkemeyer was widely regarded as one of Minnesota’s most accomplished Dirt Late Model drivers, leaving behind a career that spanned more than three decades and helped define an era of regional racing. Over the course of his career, Hinkemeyer amassed 21 track championships across nine different venues and recorded more than 200 feature victories. His breakout season came in 1981 at just 21 years old, when he earned 33 victories, including his first Silver 1000 triumph. He continued to build on that success throughout the 1990s, highlighted by his 1990 NASCAR Great Northern Region championship, where he won 18 races in just 22 starts driving the Joe Salner-owned No. 4F car.
