The City of Poughkeepsie is in mourning following a tragic and violent shooting near Stitzel Field on Lincoln Avenue that claimed the life of 46-year-old Carl Chambers of Marlboro, New York, leaving a community shaken and grieving a sudden and devastating loss.
According to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the incident unfolded on April 19, 2026, at approximately 6:33 p.m., when public safety dispatchers received a Raven gunshot detection alert along with multiple calls reporting gunfire near the area where a local adult soccer game was taking place.
When officers arrived, they found a large crowd gathered near the field and quickly learned that multiple individuals had exchanged gunfire across the street from the soccer park. Police said the individuals directly involved in the shooting fled the scene and have not yet been located.
During the response, officers discovered that a victim was being transported to a local hospital. That individual was later identified as Carl Chambers, 46, who despite medical intervention, was pronounced deceased at the hospital, leaving family and loved ones devastated by the sudden loss.
A second victim was also located after being transported separately to a hospital and was treated for injuries. Officials confirmed that this individual was listed in stable condition.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate that multiple people were involved in an exchange of gunfire and that at least three firearms were discharged, including what appears to have been a high-powered rifle.
