The community of Troy, New Hampshire, is grieving the tragic and untimely deaths of Madalyn K. Jalava, 24, and Benjamin P. Jalava, 56, who lost their lives in a devastating residential fire early Tuesday morning, March 31, 2026.

The fire broke out at 51 Morse Street at approximately 1:45 a.m. when a person inside the home called 911 to report flames in the chimney spreading to the porch. A second call later reported that the occupants were trapped inside as the fire rapidly engulfed the home. Troy Fire Department members arrived within minutes, encountering heavy fire conditions. Bravely, they entered the burning residence and were able to bring both victims outside. Emergency medical care was administered immediately, but tragically, Benjamin Jalava was pronounced dead at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, and Madalyn Jalava succumbed to her injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Family pets also perished in the fire.

Authorities confirmed that both victims were residents of the home. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading a thorough investigation into the origin and cause of the fire, while autopsies are pending to officially determine the cause and manner of death. Officials noted that, at this time, there is no indication that the fire was suspicious.

Mutual aid from neighboring departments, including Fitzwilliam, Jaffrey, Marlborough, Keene, Ashby, Winchester, Dublin, Surry, Rindge, Spofford, and Richmond, supported the Troy Fire Department. Additional assistance was provided by Troy Police, Cheshire County EMS, and Troy Water Department. No first responders were injured during the incident.

This tragic event has left the community heartbroken. Madalyn and Benjamin Jalava were taken far too soon in a fire that destroyed their home and claimed two lives. Friends, family, and neighbors are now mourning the loss of two cherished members of the community, remembering them for the lives they lived and the love they shared.
