Des Moines police have identified the woman found dead Tuesday night during a welfare check at a southside apartment complex.
Officers responded around 8 p.m. to the Flats on 5th apartments in the 7100 block of Southeast 5th Street after a caller reported being unable to reach his adult daughter. The caller expressed concern that she may have been experiencing problems with her boyfriend.
While responding, officers encountered a 33-year-old man armed with a knife. According to authorities, the man allegedly attempted to attack the father and then charged toward an officer. Police discharged their weapons, fatally shooting the man at the scene.
During the ongoing investigation tied to the welfare check, officers discovered a 33-year-old woman deceased inside an apartment unit. She has been identified as Martasha Jordane Paris McKenzie.
The man shot by police has not yet been publicly identified. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative assignment while the investigation continues. Authorities have not released additional details at this time.
