It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Scott Rothey, affectionately known as “Scott,” who passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Birchaven Village in Findlay, Ohio, at the age of 84. Scott was a visionary entrepreneur, respected economist, dedicated educator, and loving family man whose life was defined by passion, optimism, and an unwavering belief in possibility.
Born on May 28, 1941, in Ogden, Utah, Scott was the son of the late Albert Godfrey Rothey and Margaret Louise Williams. He pursued higher education at the University of Utah before continuing his studies at The Ohio State University, where he completed graduate school. His journey eventually led him to Ohio, where he would plant deep roots, build a meaningful career, and create a lifetime of memories with those he loved.
In 1974, Scott married the love of his life, Martha “Marty” Flippen. Together, they shared 51 years of marriage, building a strong and loving family. Scott was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took immense pride in supporting and celebrating his family. Known affectionately as a “Cool Dad,” he delighted in cheering on his children and grandchildren, often asking for their autographs and writing them heartfelt notes filled with encouragement and love.
Scott’s professional legacy was marked by innovation and leadership. He served as Chief Economist for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, where his expertise and insight helped shape energy policy. He went on to co-found several successful consulting firms, including Rothey, Bell, and Taub Consulting and A. Scott Rothey & Associates. As President of Suburban Natural Gas Company and later founder of KNG Energy in 1991, Scott played a pivotal role in expanding access to natural gas in rural communities across Ohio. His vision and determination brought essential infrastructure to areas that had long been underserved.
In addition to his business achievements, Scott was a passionate educator who shared his knowledge as a professor of economics at The Ohio State University. He believed deeply in the power of education and mentorship, inspiring students with his enthusiasm, intellect, and real-world experience. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on those he taught and mentored.
