According to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, Roberts was driving a silver Cadillac near the intersection of West Berrendo Road and Main Street when he failed to yield to a traffic stop. The vehicle eventually entered a trailer park at 3201 N. Kentucky Avenue, where it came to a stop at a dead end. During a high-risk traffic stop conducted by NMSP officers, Roberts exited the vehicle and, while holding a firearm, was struck by gunfire from the officers. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
