With deep sorrow, the Roswell, New Mexico community mourns the untimely and tragic passing of William James Roberts, 64, who was fatally shot on the evening of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, following an officer-involved incident in the city’s District 3.
According to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, Roberts was driving a silver Cadillac near the intersection of West Berrendo Road and Main Street when he failed to yield to a traffic stop. The vehicle eventually entered a trailer park at 3201 N. Kentucky Avenue, where it came to a stop at a dead end. During a high-risk traffic stop conducted by NMSP officers, Roberts exited the vehicle and, while holding a firearm, was struck by gunfire from the officers. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
