A former sergeant once recognized as “Deputy of the Year” is now at the center of a serious criminal case involving alleged crimes against children, according to authorities.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 45-year-old Michael Scott Dorough and his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Dorough, were arrested Tuesday and are being held without bond as the investigation unfolds.
Officials say Michael Dorough, who had been employed with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m. while on duty at the Bibb County Jail before being transported to Jones County.
According to investigators, Michael Dorough is facing multiple charges, including incest, first-degree cruelty to children, and influencing witnesses. Ashley Dorough has been charged with first-degree cruelty to children and influencing witnesses.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Dorough has since been terminated from his position, with Sheriff David Davis stating that the allegations are extremely serious and emphasizing that no one is above the law. The department is reportedly cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Authorities noted that this is not the first time Dorough has faced legal scrutiny. Reports indicate he was previously investigated in 2024 for a domestic-related incident involving a stepson, though that case was ultimately dismissed after the alleged victim declined to pursue charges.
Due to the involvement of juvenile victims, officials have released limited details about the current case. Investigators say the matter remains active and ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as more information is uncovered.
Law enforcement is urging patience as they continue to gather evidence, stressing the importance of protecting the identities and well-being of those involved.
