A devastating crash on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau County has claimed the lives of two beloved members of the community, leaving behind grief, shock, and a powerful story of lifelong love. Authorities confirmed that Donald Maxwell, 82, a bishop of a local Pentecostal church, and his wife, Liscent Maxwell, were among those who died following the collision near Exit 17 late Sunday night.
The couple, described by loved ones as childhood sweethearts, had been married for more than 60 years. Originally from Jamaica, they built a life rooted in faith after relocating to New York. Donald Maxwell was known for his leadership and service across several churches, particularly in Far Rockaway, where he and his wife faithfully attended and served every Sunday. Together, they were deeply committed to spreading the word of God and raising a loving family.
At the time of the crash, the couple was traveling in a Toyota Highlander along with a local deacon, who remains in critical condition. They were returning home to Farmingdale after attending an evening service in Bronx.
Police say the crash involved multiple vehicles and began when a driver from Oceanside allegedly driving under the influence sideswiped another car before crossing the median into oncoming traffic. The resulting collision caused a chain reaction, sending shockwaves through the area. Emergency responders transported more than ten injured individuals to nearby hospitals.
The driver has since been apprehended and charged with driving while intoxicated. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
