Scottish football and the community of Kilwinning have lost one of their gentlest giants. Jim Fleeting, aged 70, passed away on 15 March 2026, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the sport and the people he loved.
Jim’s career in football spanned decades, from his days as a player and manager at clubs including Norwich City, Ayr United, Clyde, Greenock Morton, Stirling Albion, and Kilmarnock, to his influential role as the Scottish FA’s Director of Football Development. In that capacity, he shaped generations of coaches with his wisdom, humility, and steadfast belief in learning. His impact extended beyond Scotland, influencing football professionals across Europe.
Closer to home, Jim’s love for community sport transformed Kilwinning. In 1999, he supported local advocates Jim Hodge and Jim McCubbin in campaigning for improved football facilities, helping establish the steering group that led to the creation of the Kilwinning Community Sports Club. His commitment to the town’s youth and volunteers turned Pennyburn Playing Fields into a thriving hub of football, wellbeing, and opportunity—a place that will remain a cornerstone of the community for years to come.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife Irene, his children Gemma, Barry, and Julie, and nine cherished grandchildren, many of whom continue to play and contribute at the Kilwinning Community Sports Club. Watching his family grow and flourish in the sport he loved brought him immense joy and pride.
Jim Fleeting’s legacy lives on in every child who laces up their boots at Pennyburn, every coach who learned under his guidance, and every volunteer inspired by his generosity. His life was a testament to the power of mentorship, community, and passion for the game.
He will be remembered with great love, enduring respect, and deep gratitude. The clubs, coaches, and families he touched will continue to honor his memory through the work and spirit he inspired.
May Jim Fleeting rest in peace, knowing that his influence on football and community will endure for generations to come. ⚽🕊️
