The Corpus Christi community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Leyton Hernandez, a dedicated teacher and multi-sport coach at Veterans Memorial High School, who died following a two-car accident Friday afternoon while traveling outside the Coastal Bend. He was 28.
According to a press release from the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD), Hernandez had been serving as a teacher and coach at Veterans Memorial High School for the past five years.
During that time, he became widely known for his commitment to student success, both academically and athletically. His passion for education and sports made him a respected mentor and role model to countless students who looked up to him for guidance and encouragement.
Colleagues described Hernandez as a hardworking and compassionate educator who always placed the needs of his students first. Whether in the classroom or on the field, he was known for inspiring young people to believe in themselves and work toward their goals. His energy, leadership, and positive spirit helped shape the culture of the school’s athletic programs and classrooms alike.
Hernandez is survived by his father, CCISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez, his mother, Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and his sister, Lauren Stinson. District leaders expressed their deepest condolences to the family, acknowledging the profound loss felt throughout the school district and the broader community.
“Leyton was a valued member of our CCISD family, and his impact will not be forgotten,” district officials said in a statement. “He touched the lives of so many students and colleagues through his dedication, kindness, and passion for teaching and coaching.”
In response to the tragedy, CCISD announced that its crisis counseling team will be available to provide emotional support to students, staff, and faculty when schools reopen Monday. School administrators encouraged those struggling with grief to seek support and lean on one another during this difficult time.
Before beginning his career in education, Hernandez built a reputation as a talented and determined athlete. A graduate of King High School in Corpus Christi, he excelled in sports and demonstrated leadership qualities that would later shape his work as a coach and mentor. His dedication to athletics earned him recognition among peers and coaches who remember him as both competitive and supportive.
Hernandez continued his academic and athletic journey at Texas State University, where he graduated in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree. During his time at the university, he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, forming lifelong friendships and remaining actively connected to the campus community.
Those closest to Hernandez also remember his deep love for football, a passion he shared with his father. For nine consecutive years, the two maintained a cherished tradition of attending the Texas state football championship game together, creating memories that family members say meant a great deal to them.
Friends and former students have taken to social media to share heartfelt tributes, remembering Hernandez as a mentor who cared deeply about the well-being and future of every student he encountered. Many described him as someone who made a lasting difference simply by believing in others.
