The Hanceville, Alabama, community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of James Wilson Dunkin, Jr., affectionately known as Jay, who passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the young age of 16. Though his time on this earth was brief, Jay touched countless lives with his warmth, kindness, and ability to bring joy to everyone around him.
Jay was known for his remarkable ability to make others smile effortlessly. Friends and family describe him as someone whose presence brightened any room and whose gentle spirit left a lasting impression. His love, laughter, and lighthearted nature will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted parents, James Wilson Dunkin, Sr., and Ashley Brie Dunkin, and his cherished sisters, Ava Grace Dunkin and Nevaeh Jean Armstrong. Jay was also deeply loved by his grandparents, PawPaw and Nanny Dewey and Donna Dunkin; Pappy and Kat; Daniel and Kathy Malone; and his Nae Nae, Andrea Spitzer, along with numerous extended family members and friends who held him close to their hearts.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation held at Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14. The visitation for family will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a period for guests from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The funeral service, officiated by Pastor Rick Hopkins, will begin at 1:00 p.m., celebrating Jay’s life and the love he shared with all who knew him.
Immediately following the funeral, attendees will proceed to Elvester Cemetery for a brief graveside committal service prior to interment. This gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to come together, honor Jay’s memory, and support one another in the face of this profound loss.
Though Jay’s life was far too short, the love, joy, and happiness he brought into the lives of others will live on. He is remembered not only for the bright spirit he embodied but also for the countless hearts he touched, leaving a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.
