Authorities in Akron are investigating a fatal shooting incident early Wednesday morning that left 17-year-old Honore Sommerville dead following an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles. Police say a 15-year-old boy, identified as the victim’s younger brother, has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
According to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, Sommerville was pronounced dead after being transported to Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. on the entrance ramp to Ohio Route 8 from East Tallmadge Avenue.
Police reports indicate that two vehicles became involved in a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. A 28-year-old man traveling with his girlfriend reported that their vehicle came under fire from another car. The man returned fire before leaving the area and contacting law enforcement.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but Sommerville, who was inside one of the vehicles, succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later arrested the victim’s 15-year-old brother, who admitted to firing shots toward the other vehicle and disposing of the firearm afterward. Police said the vehicle used in the confrontation had been reported stolen.
The teenager is currently facing several charges, including felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and theft of a motor vehicle. Because he is a minor, officials have not released his name.
Authorities emphasized that incidents involving firearms between moving vehicles pose serious risks not only to those involved but also to other drivers and bystanders. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have asked anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
The community is mourning the loss of Honore Sommerville while law enforcement works to piece together the events that led to this tragic confrontation.
