The Australian artisan food community is mourning the sudden and untimely passing of Alison Lansley, co-founder and co-owner of Long Paddock Cheese, whose remarkable vision and leadership helped shape one of Victoria’s most respected cheesemaking enterprises. Her death has left colleagues, friends, and the wider artisan cheese community reflecting on the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.
Alison Lansley was a passionate advocate for the Australian artisan cheese movement long before founding Long Paddock Cheese. Her commitment to the craft and community was evident through her extensive volunteer work with the Australian Specialist Cheesemakers Association, where she served as secretary for more than a decade. During this time, she played an important role in supporting and connecting cheesemakers across the country, helping strengthen the growing artisan cheese industry in Australia.
It was through her work with the association that Alison met Ivan Larcher, who would later become her co-founder. Together they shared an ambitious vision: to produce exceptional French-style cheeses in Victoria while also creating opportunities to share cheesemaking knowledge with others. Their dream eventually took shape through Long Paddock Cheese and The Cheese School.
In 2021, Alison and Ivan’s long-held vision became reality when both Long Paddock Cheese and The Cheese School officially opened their doors at The Mill in Castlemaine, Victoria. With the support of business partner Gaetan Chapon and a dedicated team, Alison helped establish the business as a benchmark for quality and innovation within the Australian artisan cheese industry.
A key part of Alison’s philosophy was her commitment to sourcing high-quality local organic milk and developing a skilled local workforce. Her dedication to craftsmanship and community helped Long Paddock Cheese earn both strong local support and international recognition. The team’s cheeses have received numerous awards, including gold medals at Le Fromage Mondial in France, along with prestigious honors in England and Australia.
Beyond her professional achievements, Alison was admired for her warmth, intelligence, and determination. Those who worked with her remember a leader who inspired others through integrity, creativity, and an unwavering belief in the value of sharing knowledge. She served not only as a colleague and mentor but also as a dear friend to many.
As the team at Long Paddock Cheese and The Cheese School mourn her loss, they also remain committed to carrying forward Alison’s vision. Her influence will continue to guide their pursuit of excellence in cheesemaking and education.
Alison Lansley’s contributions to the artisan cheese community will not be forgotten. Through the businesses she helped build, the people she mentored, and the passion she shared for her craft, her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
