Greater Manchester Community and Loved Ones Mourn the Heartbreaking Loss of 14-Year-Old Maisie Almond Following Tragic Battle with Rare Liver Failure

The heartbreaking death of 14-year-old Maisie has left her family, friends, and community grieving the loss of a bright young life taken far too soon. Maisie, a devoted Manchester City fan and described by those who knew her as a “model pupil,” passed away after doctors were unable to find a suitable liver donor before it was too late.

Only weeks before her death, Maisie had been a healthy and active teenager with no known underlying medical conditions. According to testimony shared during an inquest, her illness came suddenly and unexpectedly. Seventeen days before she died, Maisie returned home from work feeling unwell and complaining of nausea.

Her parents, Kathryn and Stuart, became increasingly concerned when they noticed her eyes turning what her mother described as an “indescribable shade of yellow.” Alarmed by the change, they rushed her to A&E, where doctors also observed that her stomach had developed a yellowish tint.

Medical teams initially suspected hepatitis and began testing for possible viral infections and other conditions. Over the following days, Maisie was admitted to hospital on three separate occasions as doctors worked urgently to understand the cause of her rapidly worsening symptoms.

As her condition deteriorated, Maisie was transferred to a specialist liver center, where doctors diagnosed her with a rare form of acute liver failure. She was placed on the transplant waiting list the following day in hopes that a suitable donor could be found quickly.

Tragically, a donor organ did not become available in time. During the critical wait, Maisie developed cerebral oedema—swelling of the brain—along with damage to other organs. By the time a potential transplant option was considered, doctors determined that her body was no longer able to withstand the procedure, and the surgery was deemed no longer viable. Maisie passed away the following day.

Those closest to Maisie remember her as a joyful, hardworking, and determined young girl. Despite her age, she balanced school with two part-time jobs and had big dreams for the future. She hoped to one day become an accountant and dreamed of backpacking around the world with her friends.

Her parents describe her as someone who was “happy and smiling all the time,” a light in the lives of everyone around her. In the wake of their devastating loss, Kathryn and Stuart have committed themselves to keeping Maisie’s memory alive by raising awareness about the importance of blood and organ donation.
