According to his father, Elton Hanekom, Tino had been living with a lung disease since birth and received regular treatment at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Despite his ongoing health challenges, he remained a cheerful and determined young boy who was loved by his classmates and teachers.

Reports indicate that Tino began complaining of intense chest pain while at school. Concerned for his wellbeing, he was first taken to an aunt’s home nearby before being rushed to the Tafelsig Clinic for medical attention. Sadly, he passed away shortly after arriving at the clinic.

Family members say Tino had big dreams for the future. He hoped to become a carpenter like his father, but due to his fragile chest condition, he had been advised against pursuing physically demanding work. Nevertheless, those who knew him describe him as an incredibly kind, friendly, and resilient young boy who always brightened the lives of those around him.

In a statement, the Western Cape Education Department expressed deep condolences to Tino’s family, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time.

As news of his passing spreads, tributes continue to pour in from classmates, teachers, and community members who remember Tino Hanekom as a warm-hearted student whose life, though short, left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
