The Quincy community is mourning the tragic and unexpected loss of Shane C. McDermott, 56, a lifelong resident whose passing has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken. Authorities confirmed that McDermott was pronounced dead Wednesday evening after an apparent shooting incident in the area of 8th and State Street in Quincy.

According to the Adams County Coroner’s Office, Shane C. McDermott was transported to the Blessing Hospital Emergency Department, where he was later pronounced deceased. Officials say the exact cause of death remains under investigation as authorities continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The situation unfolded shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when officers with the Quincy Police Department responded to the former LaGondola building after receiving a report of a possible burglary in progress. Property tax records show that the building is owned by McDermott Enterprises LLC, a business connected to Shane McDermott.

When officers arrived at the scene, along with members of the Special Investigation Unit, they discovered a man inside the building who was unresponsive and appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound. Police immediately began providing aid to the victim while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive.

Adams County EMS and the Quincy Fire Department soon reached the location and assisted officers in their efforts to save the man’s life. While some first responders worked to provide emergency medical care, additional officers cleared the building to ensure there were no other individuals inside and to secure the scene.

McDermott was transported to Blessing Hospital, but despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

During the investigation, police recovered a handgun and other pieces of physical evidence at the scene. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances that led to the shooting, and the coroner’s office confirmed that the cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

Officials say that based on the information gathered so far, there is no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. However, investigators continue to carefully examine evidence and gather information to better understand what occurred.
