James Russo was born on September 4, 1954, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Joseph “Billy” Russo and Dolores “Dolly” (Capuano) Russo. He grew up in Shrewsbury, where his love for music developed at an early age. After graduating from high school, he pursued his passion further by attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music, studying Music Education, Composition, and Arranging alongside his twin brother.

Throughout his life, Russo became widely known as a talented tenor saxophonist and performed in various local venues. He often played with his brother in the Russo Brothers Jazz Quintet, bringing live jazz performances to audiences throughout the region and earning recognition for his musical talent and dedication to the art.

In addition to performing, James Russo built a meaningful career as a music teacher in the Northbridge Public Schools, where he taught band and instrumental music to countless students over the years. He also taught general music and chorus at different grade levels and offered private lessons in saxophone and flute before retiring in 2012. Many former students remember him as an inspiring teacher who helped them develop a lifelong appreciation for music.

Beyond his professional life, Russo was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Terri (Frieswyk) Russo, and their children Joseph Russo, Elizabeth Russo, and Aimee Russo. He was also a proud grandfather to James and Benjamin Hansen, who brought him great joy. He is further survived by his twin brother John Russo, his sister Jennifer Russo, and many extended family members and friends.

Family members say Jim found his greatest happiness spending time with loved ones. He especially enjoyed vacations to Cape Cod, gardening, and fishing in favorite spots such as the Cape Cod Canal and the Blackstone River. These moments with family and nature were among the memories he treasured most.

The Russo family has also expressed gratitude to the care team at UMass Cancer Center and the staff at AdviniaCare Northbridge for their compassion and support during Jim’s final days.
