Arkansas Man Charged With Murder Wins GOP Primary for Sheriff
A man awaiting trial on a murder charge after allegedly killing his daughter’s accused abuser has won the Republican nomination for sheriff in an Arkansas county.
According to the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office, Aaron Spencer received more than 53% of the vote in the Republican primary, defeating Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley and another candidate.
Spencer, an Army veteran and farmer, was charged in October 2024 with shooting and killing a 67-year-old man who had been accused of sexually abusing Spencer’s 13-year-old daughter.
His attorneys previously told NBC News that Spencer’s actions were “justified under Arkansas law in taking action to protect his daughter and himself.”
Spencer said the case helped motivate him to run for office.
“I’m the father who acted to protect his daughter when the system failed,” he said in his campaign announcement.
He added:
“Through my own fight for justice, I’ve seen first hand the failures in law-enforcement and in our circuit court, and I refuse to stand by while others face these same failures.”
Spencer will face Democrat Brian Mitchell Sr. in the November election.
