Aaron Spencer Wins GOP Sheriff Nomination Amid Murder Trial in Arkansas
LONOKE COUNTY, Ark. – Aaron Spencer, a Republican candidate for sheriff in Lonoke County, Arkansas, has won the GOP primary despite awaiting trial for murder. Spencer defeated incumbent Sheriff John Staley on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, securing more than 53% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Arkansas Secretary of State.
Spencer faces charges for the October 2024 killing of Michael Fosler, 67, who had been accused of sexually abusing Spencer’s then-13-year-old daughter. Spencer’s attorneys argue he acted in defense of his child, though prosecutors claim the act was premeditated.
“This wasn’t a campaign about me. It was about every family who called for help and got nothing,” Spencer said after his primary victory. He now advances to the general election in November against Democrat Brian Mitchell Sr.
The case has drawn national attention, highlighting issues of law enforcement accountability, child protection, and community safety in rural Arkansas. Spencer is out on bond, and a new trial date has not yet been set.
