On Wednesday, March 4, around 5 p.m., South Bend Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of W. Dubail Street on the report of shots fired.
Prior to police arrival, dispatch was advised that a male was breaking into a car and that the homeowner shot him.
When officers arrived, they located a 16-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The juvenile was found lying next to a vehicle with its driver’s door open.
The juvenile was ultimately pronounced deceased from his injuries.
Through an investigation by the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, video footage collected from the backyard camera shows the juvenile victim walking south on Swygart Avenue toward the vehicle before opening the driver’s door and reaching inside.
At that point, the suspect, 27-year-old Keontice Reed, walks out the back door, sees the juvenile in his car, walks toward him and fires one shot.
The victim was unarmed.
South Bend Crime Scene Technicians executed a search warrant of the house, where firearms and a large amount of marijuana were recovered.
Through a collaboration with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, Reed has been charged with Murder, a Felony Firearm Enhancement and Dealing in Marijuana.
The sentencing range for murder is 45-65 years. The sentencing range for a level 6 felony is 6 months to 2 Β½ years. The sentencing range for the firearm enhancement is 5 to 20 years.
A judicial officer found that there was probable cause and determined that Reed should be held without bond. He is currently in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail and is expected to be arraigned on Friday, March 6, at 1:00 p.m.
Because the victim is a juvenile and to respect the family’s wishes, the victim’s name will not be released.
Please remember, all persons are presumed innocent until/unless convicted in a court of law.
