Sri Lankan authorities confirmed recovery of several bodies and the rescue of 32 wounded sailors. Deputy Foreign Minister officials reported at least 80 people were killed in the incident. The Iranian frigate, IRIS Dena, was about 40 nautical miles (75 km) off Galle when it sent a distress call early Wednesday morning.

Carrying approximately 180 crew members, the ship had recently participated in the 2026 International Fleet Review in Vishakapatnam, India. Sri Lanka dispatched naval and air force units for rescue operations. Officials noted no other vessels or aircraft were observed near the sinking site.

The attack comes amid ongoing US and Israeli air strikes on Iran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory drone and missile strikes across Gulf countries. The conflict has already claimed numerous lives, including six US service members.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the sinking, with Iranian officials working to interview survivors to understand the cause of the attack.
