The Ames, Iowa community is grieving the tragic loss of 61-year-old Carmie Sills and 61-year-old Theresa Leibold, who both died following a devastating single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 64 near the Wayne-Jefferson County line, just east of Mt. Vernon.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 3:57 a.m. when the vehicle they were traveling in left the interstate for reasons that remain under investigation and struck a tree head-on. Carmie Sills was pronounced dead at the scene.

Theresa Leibold, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was rushed to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the best efforts of healthcare professionals, she later succumbed to her injuries.
