A fatal shooting erupted near the grand opening of the newest Marathon Burger location in downtown Long Beach on Sunday, sending crowds fleeing and transforming a highly anticipated community celebration into a scene of chaos and fear.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots just as large lines of customers gathered outside the restaurant, which had drawn significant attention for its debut. People ran for cover, ducking behind vehicles and storefronts as confusion spread through the busy downtown corridor.
According to a spokesperson for Marathon Burger, the violence was not connected to the restaurant or its opening event. Despite the nearby crime scene, the spokesperson told ABC7 that the launch itself was a “huge success,” noting that the restaurant continued serving customers while police secured the area outside with crime scene tape.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and confirmed at least one person was killed. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, and it remains unclear whether additional individuals were injured. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting, including whether the incident stemmed from a targeted dispute or an altercation unrelated to the opening.
Law enforcement maintained a heavy presence in the area for several hours, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
City leaders and community members expressed shock that the violence occurred during what was meant to be a positive moment for downtown revitalization and local business growth.
