She Disappeared After a Shower. Police Found Her Stabbed Over 90 Times in a Toolbox.
On February 25, 2026, a judge sentenced 41-year-old Hagen Roberts to life plus five years in prison for the 2020 murder of Cynthia Capps in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
On October 8, 2020, police responded to a residence on Green Cedar Lane after Capps’ husband called authorities when he could not locate his wife following her shower. He reported finding a drop of blood on the kitchen floor.
Investigators learned the family had been renting a room to Roberts. When officers attempted to enter his room, it was locked. After forcing entry, they found Roberts lying in bed. Authorities noted he appeared to have recently showered and had a cut on his right hand wrapped in a black bandana.
During a search of the property, officers located blood stains in the backyard before discovering Capps’ body concealed inside a toolbox. The Chief Medical Examiner later determined she had been stabbed more than 90 times in the head, neck, and face.
A metal shard recovered from Capps’ skull matched a broken-tipped black folding knife found in Roberts’ room. Police also recovered blood-covered clothing in an outside trash can and documented blood stains throughout the home. DNA from both Capps and Roberts was found on key pieces of evidence.
Roberts was found guilty of first-degree murder and stabbing in the commission of a felony following a three-day trial. He was sentenced to life plus five years, the maximum allowed under law.
