The Buena Vista community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 30-year-old Malik Richards, whose life was tragically taken in a shooting during the early morning hours of February 20, 2026.
According to the New Mexico State Police, dispatchers received reports around 12:44 a.m. of multiple gunshots near 69 County Road C011. Within minutes, officers were sent to the residence after a call reported that a man had been shot.
When first responders arrived, they found individuals performing CPR on Richards in a desperate effort to save his life. Despite those attempts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Investigators later determined that the fatal gunfire appeared to have come from outside the residence, striking Richards while he was seated inside. A defect in a blanket used as a curtain suggested the round entered from outside. No weapon was found in the room.
Authorities recovered a 5.56 caliber spent casing several hundred yards from the home. A 16-year-old suspect was later taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting. The case remains under active investigation.
As loved ones struggle to process this devastating loss, Malik Richards is remembered as more than a victim of violence — he was a son, a family member, and a friend whose life held meaning and promise. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. The Buena Vista community now mourns together, holding his memory close while seeking justice and healing in the days ahead.
