The community in Phoenix is reflecting on the tragic events that unfolded Monday night in south Phoenix, resulting in the death of 34-year-old Dylan Rockford Fohrenkam.
According to authorities, officers responded just after 8 p.m. to reports of a man allegedly pointing a gun near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road. When officers arrived, Fohrenkam was located at a nearby park. Police say he left the area on a bicycle, leading officers through the neighborhood before getting off and running toward a residence.
Officials stated that attempts to stop him using less-lethal tools were unsuccessful. During a physical attempt to detain him, both an officer and Fohrenkam fell to the ground. Authorities reported that during the fall, the firearm discharged, striking both men.
Fohrenkam was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A responding officer was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
