The shooting occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, around 3:00 p.m. at Glass City Academy, a dropout recovery high school located in downtown Toledo at Monroe and 10th streets. The victim—a 17-year-old student—was shot multiple times just inside the front doors (student entrance) as classes were dismissing for the day.
Toledo Police responded quickly, finding shell casings both inside and outside the doorway. The teen was rushed to a nearby hospital where they remain in critical condition.
Suspect Details and Charges
Authorities identified Vashawn Dixon, 18, as the suspect. He is charged with felonious assault (a second-degree felony). Toledo police filed documents in Toledo Municipal Court on Tuesday and issued an arrest warrant. As of the latest reports, Dixon has not been taken into custody, and the investigation continues.
Police believe the shooter was a current or former student who entered the building and carried out the attack shortly after stepping inside—described by Superintendent Stewart Jesse as the suspect getting “about 2 ft in the building” before firing.
School Response and Safety Measures
Glass City Academy had armed security on site at the time of the shooting. Superintendent Jesse confirmed the school’s safety was secured immediately after the incident. Despite the ongoing manhunt for the suspect, classes resumed on Tuesday, February 24.
The academy serves as a dropout recovery program for at-risk students in the Toledo area.
