According to the orlando police Department , officers responded at approximately 2:31 a.m. on February 22, 2026, to the 1900 block of North Orange Avenue, just north of Lake Ivanhoe, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Cruz suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed that Cruz was born May 18, 1992.

Detectives determined that prior to the shooting, Cruz and the suspect were involved in a verbal and physical altercation on the sidewalk outside the nightclub area. Investigators say that during the dispute, the suspect retrieved a firearm from a vehicle and shot Cruz before fleeing the scene. Patrol officers later located the suspect’s vehicle a short distance away, leading to further developments in the case.

Police subsequently arrested Jean Gabriel Borja Gil De La Madr, 37, who has been charged with Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm. Authorities confirmed the case marks the third homicide in Orlando in 2026. While charges have been filed, Cruz’s family believes another individual may have been directly responsible for pulling the trigger. Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether additional suspects are being sought as the case remains under active investigation.

Cruz’s father, Anthony Cruz, shared that his son and his partner had spent the evening at Savoy Orlando enjoying the night before the violence unfolded. According to the family, as the couple exited the club after closing time, a vehicle sped past them. Cruz’s partner allegedly shouted toward the occupants of the vehicle, prompting the car to stop. A physical altercation reportedly began between Cruz’s partner and one of the individuals from the vehicle. When Cruz intervened to help, another individual exited the car, and the shooting occurred.

“My son didn’t deserve what happened,” Anthony Cruz said. “All I have left is a shirt — a shirt with a bullet hole.”

In the days following the tragedy, a small memorial has formed across from the nightclub, where friends, neighbors, and community members have gathered to honor Cruz’s life. Joshua Cooper, owner of Savoy Orlando, expressed the profound impact the loss has had on the LGBTQ+ community, noting that while the shooting occurred off the club’s property, the grief has been deeply felt.

Though many did not know Cruz personally, those who have come forward describe him as kind, supportive, and full of life. His death has left a void not only in his family but also among those who share in the community he helped shape through presence, friendship, and compassion.
