Jane was a long-term member of McInnes Cooper, joining the firm after an impressive clerkship with The Honourable Michel Bastarache at the Supreme Court of Canada. This distinguished beginning set the stage for a remarkable legal career that would span decades and impact countless individuals and families throughout Nova Scotia and beyond.

Jane possessed a remarkable legal mind—the kind of intellect that could analyze and simplify even the most complex legal issues with ease. Her ability to navigate complicated legal terrain was rivaled by few, and she approached every case with dedication, precision, and an unwavering commitment to her clients’ causes. She embraced the role of advocate wholehearted and was truly in her element when litigating in court, fighting passionately for the outcomes her clients deserved.

While Jane influenced the results of many important legal cases throughout her distinguished career, her impact extended far beyond courtroom victories. She even more importantly influenced the development of many lawyers through her mentorship and friendship. Not one for pretence or formality, Jane had a natural ability to lead and to put people at ease. She made everyone feel welcome, valued, and supported, whether they were junior associates seeking guidance or seasoned colleagues looking for counsel.

Jane’s reach was long not only in terms of her litigation expertise and mentorship but also in her dedication to giving back to her profession and community. She was an active volunteer with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, having recently served on Council, where she contributed her wisdom and expertise to shaping the future of the legal profession in Nova Scotia.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jane was a lifelong champion of the Liberal Party, contributing her talents and advice to many campaigns and initiatives. Her commitment to public service and civic engagement was evident in everything she did.

Jane’s legacy will live on through the countless lawyers she mentored, the clients she advocated for, and the communities she served. She showed us what it means to be a dedicated professional, a compassionate mentor, and a genuine human being.

Our deepest condolences are sent to Jane’s family and friends, and particularly to her children Sam, Audrey, and Bridget, who were the light of her life. She loved you deeply and prided herself on being your mother.

Funeral and memorial arrangements will be shared as they become available.

Rest in peace, dear Jane. Your legacy of excellence, mentorship, and compassion will never be forgotten. You have left an indelible mark on the legal profession and on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
