Officers responded around 1:10 a.m. to reports of multiple people shot near 102nd Street and South Avenue J. When police arrived, they found Joan lying in a parking lot with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A second victim, a 38-year-old woman, was also discovered at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. She was taken to a hospital in good condition and is expected to recover.

Investigators say both women were standing among a crowd gathered in a church parking lot when a blue vehicle approached. Someone inside the car opened fire toward the group before speeding away. Multiple shell casings were reportedly recovered as detectives canvassed the area for surveillance footage and witnesses.

No arrests have been announced, and police have not released a suspect description. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
