The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.
On February 21, 2026, just before 10:00 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) Detectives and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers were following a vehicle occupied by suspects believed to be involved in a recent shooting. A SWAT vehicle, equipped with a grappler device, attempted to stop the suspect vehicle in the 10600 block of E. 10th Street.
At this point, shots were fired in the direction of officers from the suspect vehicle. At least one IMPD officer returned fire. The suspect vehicle continued fleeing until SWAT officers used a vehicle containment technique, bringing it to a stop in the 10900 block of E. 10th Street.
Three of the occupants were taken into custody immediately. One occupant attempted to flee on foot. Officers utilized less-lethal rounds and a taser to take him into custody. Two of the suspects, confirmed to be juvenile males, were transported to area hospitals in stable condition with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. A third suspect, also a juvenile male, was transported to the hospital in stable condition with injuries from the less-lethal rounds. The fourth suspect, an adult male, was uninjured and detained for further investigation.
At least one IMPD vehicle sustained damage from gunfire. A rifle and a handgun were found inside the suspect vehicle. Photos are below. One juvenile suspect was in possession of a machine gun conversion device when he was apprehended.
There are no known injuries to officers or uninvolved community members.
The officer who discharged his firearm was equipped with a body-worn camera which was activated.
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Prosecutorโ€™s Office also responded to assist in the investigation.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is leading the criminal investigation. A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. As standard procedure in officer-involved shooting incidents, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Following the criminal investigation, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing regarding the attempted use of deadly force.
The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for those involved.
The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives. (Confirm)
