Arkia “Kia” Berry, 28, died in a triple homicide on July 13, 2024, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was shot and killed inside a car alongside her 5-year-old son, Landyn Brooks, and her 28-year-old boyfriend, Eric
Ashley Jr. Birmingham police initially responded to a 911 call about a car accident in the Echo Highlands neighborhood and found the bodies in a bullet-riddled car. Surveillance footage reportedly captured a green Kia Soul entering the neighborhood shortly before the shooting and speeding away just after Berry sent her text message. Investigators believe there was some interaction between the occupants of Berry’s car and the green Kia Soul.
In her final moments, as she lay dying from her wounds, Berry sent a single-word text message to a friend: “Jaco”. Police believe this text message identified her alleged killer, Jacorian Deshawn McGregor, also known as “Jaco”, who is facing capital murder charges for the triple slaying. 
Police also found text messages between McGregor and Ashley from earlier in the day indicating they were planning to meet up. Additionally, friends of McGregor sent texts urging him to “lay low, stay out of sight, stay hidden” after the shooting, and Ashley had previously searched for McGregor. McGregor was arrested in February 2025. He is being held without bond. The exact nature of the relationship between Berry, Ashley, and McGregor has not been released by investigators.
