On April 17, 2022, Ayden Police Department responded to a shooting on Queen Street in Ayden, NC. Evidence presented at trial showed that Anthony Sutton was engaged in a verbal dispute with Mr. Rogers’ grandfather and seated in his vehicle when approached by Rogers. Following a verbal dispute involving the defendant’s grandfather, Rogers fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, striking Sutton twice in the chest. Rogers continued to fire after striking Mr. Sutton and subsequently left the scene of the crime.
Video collected from neighboring homes was crucial in identifying the witnesses. Eyewitnesses testified that Stephon Rogers was the shooter.
Assistant District Attorney Anthony Futrell represented the State of North Carolina. With the assistance of the Ayden Police Department, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, the Ayden community and the staff support, Rogers was found guilty of First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Following the conviction, Resident Superior Court Judge Marvin K. Blount, III, sentenced Rogers to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.
