A man is dead following an early-morning officer-involved shooting in the southwest Chicago suburb of Palos Hills after police say he threatened to kill his girlfriend and her children with a shotgun.
Authorities report officers were dispatched around 4:18 a.m. to the 0โ100 block of Cour Versaille for a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, they encountered a man armed with a shotgun who was allegedly preparing to carry out the threat.
Police say the situation escalated quickly, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect โ identified as 37-year-old Gerhardt Facko of Palos Hills โ was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers, civilians, or children were reported injured during the confrontation.
Investigators believe the incident was strictly domestic in nature, and officials emphasized that officers intervened to prevent imminent harm. The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit has taken over the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
Authorities have not released additional details about the events leading up to the threat or whether prior calls had been made to the residence. The case remains under active review as investigators examine body-camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence.
