Police said Carter suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Investigators detained a person of interest at the scene and subsequently arrested 21-year-old Amunique Cavitt on requested charges of first-degree murder.

Court records indicate Cavitt claimed Carter had been abusive and alleged he struck and strangled her during an argument while they were driving in a Jeep prior to the shooting. However, a witness told police the confrontation escalated after Carter exited the vehicle, alleging the driver attempted to run him over before getting out and firing multiple shots—both while he was standing and again after he fell to the ground.

Officers recovered seven shell casings from the grass where the shooting occurred, supporting accounts of repeated gunfire. Following legal proceedings, a judge sentenced Cavitt on February 12, 2026, to 165 months in prison—equivalent to 13 years and nine months.

The case drew significant attention in the community due to the circumstances of the confrontation and the fact that the killing occurred on the victim’s birthday. Authorities say the sentence concludes the criminal case, though the impact of the tragedy continues to be felt by both families involved.
