A tragic shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket on Monday afternoon claimed three lives, including that of the suspected gunman, and left three others hospitalized during a high school hockey game.

Law enforcement officials say the violence unfolded around 2:30 p.m. during a Senior Night contest between the Coventry–Johnston co-op team and the Blackstone Valley co-op team. Spectators were in the stands when shots were fired, triggering panic inside the arena.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 56-year-old Robert K. Dorgan of North Providence, who also used the name Roberta Esposito. Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute that escalated into a murder-suicide.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the suspect fatally shot his ex-wife at the scene and critically wounded multiple family members before taking his own life. An adult daughter later died at the hospital. One child remains hospitalized in critical condition. Three individuals were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
Pawtucket Police Department Chief Tina Goncalves described the incident as a “family dispute” and confirmed that at least one of the victims was a woman. Officials have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
The suspect was reportedly the parent of a senior hockey player participating in the game at the time of the shooting. The student was not physically harmed.
Law Enforcement and Community Response
The Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene to assist local authorities. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that federal resources would be provided as needed.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee issued a statement expressing heartbreak over the tragedy and gratitude for first responders, hospital personnel, and mental health professionals who assisted victims and families.
The Providence Bruins also shared condolences, offering support to the families affected and to the broader hockey community.
Coventry Public Schools Superintendent Don Cowart confirmed that all Coventry players present at the arena were accounted for and safe. School officials coordinated closely with law enforcement to ensure student safety.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as spectators sought cover or fled the building. A nearby Walgreens employee reported that individuals rushed into the store in distress, reporting an active shooter situation.
Investigation Ongoing
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation, which authorities say remains active. Officials have emphasized that preliminary findings indicate the incident was targeted and connected to a domestic conflict rather than a random attack.
Community leaders are encouraging anyone affected by the tragedy to seek counseling and mental health support as Pawtucket begins to process the devastating events.
Further updates are expected as investigators continue to gather information.
