Authorities in Indiana have released the booking photo of 47‑year‑old Kenneth Terrell Johnson, the man accused of ambushing police and killing Brian Elliott, a Beech Grove police officer, during a violent encounter Monday evening. Johnson was also accused of shooting and wounding a second officer before fleeing the scene.
Police initially issued a Blue Alert as Johnson was considered armed and dangerous following the shooting, which occurred when officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex in Beech Grove, near Indianapolis.
After hours of intensive searching by multiple law enforcement agencies — including the Indiana State Police and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT teams — Johnson was taken into custody late Monday night without further incident. A tip from a concerned resident helped officers locate him hiding inside a nearby building.
Officer Elliott, a 33‑year‑old veteran of the department and local community, was pronounced dead at a hospital after being shot. The second wounded officer survived and is expected to recover, authorities said.
The investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare charges tied to murder, attempted murder, and other related offenses. Authorities continue to review evidence, including body‑camera footage and witness statements, while expressing condolences to Officer Elliott’s family and honoring his service.
