The North Central College community is united in grief as it mourns the tragic loss of Henry Kellen Blackmore, an 18-year-old student whose life was cut short Sunday night in a train accident in Geneva, Illinois.

According to the Geneva Police, firefighters and emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 9:51 p.m. near the Western Avenue grade crossing. Authorities said a freight train conductor located Henry near the Union Pacific–West railway tracks east of Western Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have stated that foul play is not suspected, and the incident remains under investigation.

Henry was more than a student—he was a beloved teammate on the North Central College volleyball team, a dedicated scholar, and a bright presence on campus. College officials described him as intelligent, kind, and deeply caring, someone who brought positivity and quiet leadership into every space he entered. His teammates remember him not only for his athletic commitment but also for his encouragement, humility, and unwavering support of others.

A son, brother, friend, and classmate, Henry was deeply loved by his family and cherished by those who knew him. His compassion, work ethic, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression, and his absence will be felt across the campus and beyond. Friends say he had a way of making people feel seen and valued, and his smile and kindness were constants in many people’s lives.
