Ted Hutchings Car Accident RED DEER, Alberta — Ted Hutchings, a longtime Red Deer educator and deeply loved husband, father, and friend, has died following a motor vehicle collision south of Golden, British Columbia. He was traveling to visit friends on Thursday, February 5, when the fatal crash occurred.
Emergency responders pronounced Hutchings dead at the scene. Family members said they were informed he was likely killed instantly and did not suffer. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear, and the family noted they may never fully know what led to the tragedy.
Hutchings is remembered first and foremost as a devoted family man. He was a constant and loving presence by the side of his wife, Lori, particularly through recent health challenges. He was immensely proud of his sons, Connor and Jeff, not only for their accomplishments but for the compassionate young men they have become. He shared a close bond with his father, Stew, and his sister, Heather, and had been looking forward to spending more time with them in retirement. As an uncle, he cherished time with his nieces and nephews, and he found daily joy in walks with the family dogs, Downie and Finn.
Beyond his family, Hutchings was known for his unwavering loyalty as a friend and colleague. His relationships spanned decades and communities, from school friends to coworkers, hockey families, and fellow volunteers. Those who knew him consistently described him as generous with his time, deeply kind, and steadfastly supportive.
Hutchings’ impact as an educator was profound and far-reaching. He dedicated 20 years to Red Deer Public Schools, serving as a teacher and vice-principal at Eastview Middle School, Glendale Middle School, and Grandview Elementary School. He later joined Chinook’s Edge School Division, where he served as principal at Delburne Centralized School and Innisfail Middle School.
Last year, Hutchings chose to step away from administration and return to the classroom, accepting what his family described as his dream role at Penhold Crossing Secondary School. There, he worked as an academic and career counsellor, work experience coordinator, and classroom teacher. He had rediscovered his passion for education and found renewed purpose working closely with students, particularly those who needed extra guidance and belief.
The loss of Ted Hutchings has left a deep void in his family, schools, and the wider community he served with such dedication. Arrangements and details regarding next steps will be shared by the family in the coming days.
He is remembered as an exceptional educator, a loyal friend, and a man whose life was defined by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.
