According to the New York State Police, officers were dispatched to South Hall at approximately 3:45 p.m. following reports that a person had been shot. Upon arrival, troopers located a 20-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the neck; the victim, who was not a student, was transported to Upstate University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In response to the incident, university officials placed the campus under lockdown, directing students and staff to shelter in place while police secured the scene and searched for the suspect. The lockdown remained in effect into the evening, with South Hall and Onondaga Hall under continued restriction as law enforcement conducted further searches.

State Police investigators, working in coordination with campus police and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, have indicated there is no evidence of a broader threat to the university community, characterizing the shooting as stemming from an isolated dispute between individuals familiar with one another.

Campus officials lifted the broader shelter-in-place order as students returned to classes the following day, though an increased police presence remained while the investigation continued.

Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed she had been briefed on the situation and emphasized the priority of safety for students and staff.

No arrests have been announced, and authorities continue to seek information related to the shooting. Anyone with details is urged to contact the New York State Police.
