According to warrants issued in Pitt County, Jaquan Maliak Taylor, 23, has been charged with Felony Intentional Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury following an incident involving a juvenile under the age of 16.
Court documents allege that Taylor intentionally inflicted serious bodily injury on the child, resulting in a gunshot wound to the juvenile’s left knee. The warrants further state that at the time of the incident, Taylor was acting as a father figure and caregiver for the child.
In addition to the child abuse charge, Taylor is also facing charges of:
• Assault With a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury
• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
Authorities allege the weapon involved was a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Records indicate Taylor had a prior felony conviction in Beaufort County in 2019, making it unlawful for him to possess a firearm.
The charges stem from an investigation by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
Felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury is a high-level felony in North Carolina and carries the possibility of significant prison time if convicted.
Taylor was arrested and is expected to appear in Pitt County District Court.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
