The University of Connecticut (UConn) and the Stirling, New Jersey community are mourning the tragic loss of Zachary Rubin, a first-year student and talented musician, who passed away on February 3, 2026.
Zachary, a promising student in both the School of Business and the School of Fine Arts, had recently pursued a dual major in Finance and Music, demonstrating his diverse talents and dedication to both academics and the arts.
Born and raised in Stirling, Zachary was a gifted saxophonist who actively contributed to UConn’s music programs. He was a valued member of the Varsity/Pep Band, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the Fresh Reeds saxophone quartet.
His skill and dedication to music were evident not only at UConn but also during his high school years. At Watchung Regional High School, Zachary performed in the Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pit Orchestra, and was a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society.
His exceptional talent earned him the honor of representing his high school at the All-State Band, sponsored by the New Jersey Music Educators Association, highlighting his musical accomplishments from an early age.
Zachary’s passing has left a profound void in the UConn community. Faculty, classmates, and peers remember him as a bright, kind, and talented student whose dedication to music and academics inspired those around him.

Student Health & Wellness Mental Health Services (SHaW) offers appointments and screenings to help students navigate grief. Additionally, 24/7 confidential support is available through BeWell for immediate assistance.
Let’s Talk drop-in office hours and the Growth Through Grief support group, held on Mondays from 4:00–5:00 pm in Arjona, provide guidance and a safe space for those coping with loss. The Dean of Students Office is also available to offer support and help students through this challenging time.
