William “Bumpy” John Schieck passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at his home in Rockville Centre, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family and close friends. Born on September 7, 1940, Bill was the second of six children born to William and Margaret Schieck. A lifelong New Yorker, he also cherished the time he spent in St. Augustine, Florida, later in life.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he formed lifelong friendships with Memo Capone and Tom Boucher. After his military service, he spent three adventurous years working as a lobster fisherman alongside Memo, an experience he fondly recalled throughout his life. Bill then devoted 21 years to public service with the New York City Police Department, rising through the ranks to become a detective. A graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, he also served with pride as president of the Detective Endowment Association. During his career, Bill built deep and lasting friendships with colleagues including Louie Cruz, Eddie Lentol, Jack Cassidy, and Ray Kopp—relationships that meant the world to him. Following his retirement from the NYPD, he continued his professional life as an audit investigator for Presbyterian Hospital.
Above all else, Bill treasured time spent with family and friends. He was a devoted father to his sons, Billy and Danny, and warmly welcomed two daughters, Kerin and Katie, into the family through marriage. As “Gramps,” he took endless joy in his seven grandchildren—Will, Kristie, Caroline, Daniel, Connor, Molly, and Brendan—delighting them with silly songs, exaggerated facial expressions, and his unforgettable dance moves.
Known for his sharp wit, genuine nature, and infectious sense of humor, Bill loved sharing stories from his years in the Army, on the job as a police officer, and out on the water as a lobster fisherman. One of his greatest passions was cars. While he admired all makes and models, nothing compared to his beloved 1954 Corvette—a true labor of love that he painstakingly rebuilt from the ground up with his baby brother and best friend, John.
“Bumpy” will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family asks that he be remembered not with sorrow but for the laughter, warmth, and joy he brought into the lives of others.
