With heavy hearts, we remember and honor the life of Mary Smith, age 31, whose life was tragically and violently taken on the evening of January 31, 2026. Words can never fully capture the depth of loss felt by those who loved her, but we share this tribute in remembrance of her life, her presence, and the love she leaves behind.
On that Friday night at approximately 9:02 p.m., officers responded to a welfare check at 156 E. Academy Street, Apartment 413. Upon arrival, Mary was found deceased, having suffered multiple stab wounds. What should have been a place of safety became the scene of an unimaginable tragedy, sending shockwaves through her family, friends, and the wider community.
Law enforcement acted swiftly. A suspect was located and detained just a few blocks from the scene. The Criminal Investigations Division responded and assumed command of the investigation. At its conclusion, detectives charged Nikkese Matthews, age 19, of Baltimore, Maryland, with First Degree Murder. Matthews was held at the Randolph County Jail without bond. Mary’s next of kin was notified, beginning a long and painful journey of grief that no family should ever have to endure.
The response to the scene involved multiple agencies working together during a difficult and emotionally charged night. The Asheboro Fire Department and Randolph County Emergency Services provided assistance, while deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office supported the Asheboro Police Department by answering calls for service as several officers remained committed at the scene. Their efforts ensured the community’s safety during an incredibly tragic situation.
Beyond the details of that night, Mary Smith was so much more than the circumstances of her death. She was a daughter, a friend, a loved one—someone whose life had meaning, dreams, and a future that was cruelly taken away. Those who knew Mary remember her for her humanity, her spirit, and the moments she shared with others—moments that will now live on only in memory.
As we mourn Mary’s passing, we also stand in solidarity with her family and loved ones, offering prayers, compassion, and support during this time of profound sorrow. May they find strength in one another, and may they take comfort in knowing that Mary’s life mattered deeply and will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Mary Smith.
Your life was precious, your absence is deeply felt, and your memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved you.
